Why Orthodontic Surgery is Needed

At times either during or after orthodontic treatment, there can be an abundance of gingival tissue that overgrow onto the crowns of our teeth. This excess tissue can be removed via a procedure called gingivectomy. This procedure can be done via traditional methods or with a laser on a case by case scenario.
Maintaining adequate tissue levels and thickness is key to achieving successful orthodontic treatment outcomes. If your orthodontist has concerns regarding your tissue levels at any time during treatment, a soft tissue graft is sometimes needed to ensure that your teeth are healthy in their new position. Our office offers many different options to perform gingival grafting including but not limited to using your own tissue or donor tissue to augment your gingiva.
Our anatomy is oftentimes a key factor in achieving proper treatment outcomes. One key piece of anatomy that can play a role is a structure called a frenum. A frenum is a muscular attachment that can attach from either lips, tongue or cheeks to the gingival tissue supporting or teeth. If this structure is attached to high or low, it can pull on our gingiva and bone and create problems. Our office can perform a procedure called a frenectomy to release this attachment and allow it to heal in a position where it is not impinging on any key periodontal structures.
A big concern for many patients is that amount of time that orthodontic treatment will take. Our office proudly works with several orthodontists to achieve treatment outcomes in a greatly reduced amount of time utilizing periodontal surgical techniques. Our techniques involve performing soft tissue and hard tissue grafting techniques while utilizing your own stem cells to allow your teeth to move faster and more securely.
